Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left, the Ford family was looked after by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford began performing in her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later appeared as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. But Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
